Soil improvement

Science with a taste

Stanford Harvest

Barley between the melons?

It’s all part of the soil improvement plan of Athol McOnie. The Elandsvalley farm he and Vivienne moved in some months ago was neglected for several years and to grow veggies and other crops the soil needed a boost to prevent further erosion and to improve fertility. The barley between the melons is a good example: it prevents the wind further eroding the soil and after the harvest it naturally composts itself into the soil. Yes; running a farm goes beyond science. It’s bringing science alive.
